Batley Grammar School Ski Trip to Folgarida Easter 2018

During the Easter holidays a team of 40 students from Batley Grammar School travelled to Folgarida in Italy to ski in the breath-taking Dolomites mountain range. Folgarida is a quiet, friendly hamlet nestled amongst the pine trees in the heart of the Dolomites. The ski resort caters for all skiing abilities, and is home to some truly stunning scenery. It was a week filled with blue skies, big smiles and sheer determination from all students as they challenged themselves to learn a new skill. The snow conditions were superb, particularly as it was late in the season and the students were lucky to ski on four inches of fresh powder towards the end of the week.

Each day the students participated in four hours of ski lessons and enjoyed a delicious lunch of fresh Italian pasta on the slopes. The beginner groups made exceptional progress throughout the week, which was underpinned by their positive attitude and growth mind-set. The intermediate groups refined their parallel turns and tackled some more challenging off piste skiing with great control and enthusiasm. During the evenings students participated in a range of activities from bowling, table tennis, speed quizzes and ‘Folagrida’s Next Top Model!’. Throughout the week the ski instructors and teachers nominated students to receive Batley Ski Awards. These were awarded to students who showed exceptional character on the slopes. In addition to this students’ participated in a ‘News Flash’ activity giving them the opportunity to share highlights and successes from the day.

On the final day the ski instructors presented each group with their ski achievement records. Every student achieved at least their Bronze Ski Award indicating that they could demonstrate good control and turn competently on the slopes. This was a great achievement for the Batley Ski Team and topped off an incredible week. From the moment that the bus left Batley to embark upon the long journey through Europe, the students showed fantastic team spirit and infectious enthusiasm and were a real credit to the school.
